Shar Watkins, NP
As early as high school, nurse practitioner Shar Watkins was destined for a career in the medical field. "I have always had an interest in science," Watkins shared. "I attended high school at the Buffalo Academy of Science and Math in Buffalo, New York. That gave me a great foundation for later earning a bachelor's degree from Winston-Salem State University and becoming a registered nurse."
Watkins worked as a labor and delivery RN, helping women through every stage of childbirth. She later earned a Master of Science in Nursing at the University of Cincinnati in Cincinnati, Ohio, to become a nurse practitioner. "I became a nurse practitioner so I could help my patients during all stages of life, not just when they were in the hospital," Watkins said. "I wanted to be able to get to know them more personally and provide them with excellent care."
Watkins believes a large part of that excellent care is educating her patients. "I have always believed that education is power," she explained. "I want to empower young girls and women to be active participants in their health care, and to protect and take care of their bodies."
Watkins says she has found an excellent place to provide that care here at Novant Health Mintview OB/GYN. "I work with the most amazing, talented and funny doctors on the planet," she said. "They are very knowledgable and passionate about women's health, yet so down to earth!"
Watkins understands the concerns facing busy mothers, since she is a mother of four herself. "I have three sons and a daughter," she said, "and they definitely keep me running. The younger ones are very involved in sports, so we spend a lot of time watching them play. When I do get time to myself, I enjoy reading James Patterson books, and I love spoken word poetry!"
